Iceland currency : Icelandic Króna (ISO 4217 currency code: ISK, symbol: kr) : Sometimes called Icelandic Crown. Official currency of Iceland (Ísland), a Nordic island country in the North Atlantic Ocean, and its capital and largest city is Reykjavík. Iceland participated in the historical Scandinavian Monetary Union as like the Nordic currencies including the Danish krone, Swedish krona, Norwegian krone. The currency name króna comes from the Latin word corona, meaning of crown. In 1874, the Danish krone was introduced to Iceland, replacing the earlier Danish currency, the rigsdaler. In 1885, Iceland began issuing its own banknotes. In 1981, the Icelandic krona was revalued. Iceland is a representative democracy and a parliamentary republic. Iceland is the second smallest country by population, after the Seychelles. Iceland has no standing army, but has the Icelandic Coast Guard which also maintains the Iceland Air Defence System, and an Iceland Crisis Response Unit. Iceland is a member of the UN, NATO, EFTA, Council of Europe and OECD. In March 2015, Icelandic authorities announced that Iceland should not be seen as candidate state, and that there were no specific plans to continue any membership process, and also stated that the krona will remain as Iceland's currency for at least the foreseeable future. Its central bank is Central Bank of Iceland.
